About Al-Ummah
Founded this year, Al-Ummah, a monthly magazine, aims to be the leading outlet for serious discussions on Muslim affairs, as also the changing dynamics of global geopolitics, with a focus on the Middle East and Turkiye.
The magazine is published by the Al-Ummah Foundation, affiliated with the Islamic Center for Research & Documentation, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Center is a non-profit and nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to the understanding of world politics and the role of Muslims in modern times through the free exchange of ideas.
Al-Ummah is a multifaceted initiative with a print magazine, a website, an app, a podcast, newsletters, and more, committed to restoring depth, rigor, and reflecting an age dominated by high-speed technology, polarization and fragmented commentary. Our editorial philosophy is clear: stressing evidence over ideology, structured analysis over fragmented commentary, context over episodic reporting, and strategic patterns over isolated events.
The team members with strong standing in journalism are ready to seek depth, accuracy, and accessibility, simultaneously reaching global decision-makers alongside specialized and non-specialized readers. Al-Ummah is aware that its readers will not be just sensitive to the language that it will use, but also to the depth of debates and analyses that each article will carry.
Under the experienced leadership of Mr. Mohammad Zakir Hussain, a researcher and senior journalist with a distinguished career in Islamic media, a team has been formed, pooling in experienced and talented journalists and scholars to take charge.
Mission
The world is undergoing a profound structural change. Technological acceleration is reshaping markets and governance. Geopolitical rivalry, financial instability, regional conflicts, climate pressures and social transformations are redefining the architecture of the global order. Besides, the nearly 1.8 billion Muslims today grope in the dark for want of any meaningful direction to a peaceful and dignified living, flourishing in a possible era of enlightenment and civilizational progress. This necessitated us to think afresh and formulate ideas to play an important role, however small in the beginning, to make things better for humanity.
The idea to launch a multi-faceted media platform is the outcome of this bleak backdrop. Al-Ummah magazine aims to initiate steps to reverse thinking that conflicts with a life that is sensible and peaceful.
Al-Ummah seeks to put things in perspective. It hunts for analyses and commentaries on issues that matter most. It prioritizes the right narratives in the global discourse. It places importance on a sensible approach to everything that concerns mankind. By publishing simultaneously in English, Arabic, Bengali, and Turkish, the journal will transcend linguistic and regional barriers, creating a truly inclusive and global conversation. The aim is to become a leading intellectual reference in the Muslim world and globally, serving as a unifying voice for the Islamic community.
The magazine does not claim to transform the world. Yet it is a small step in that direction. Everything starts with that first small step. This, therefore, justifies and seeks support from all like-minded people who yearn for a better future, and it is the right time for them to come forward, join us, and invest in the future. The time for a journal of this scope, vision, and mission is now.
Vision
The magazine outlines an editorial vision that takes into account the issues of global interest with a focus on Muslim affairs. It will have articles and analyses, covering a broad range of subjects, not only political but historical and economic, with related and relevant images and graphics as and when they apply.
Steps are afoot to pool writers of eminence, having expertise in their respective fields, from across the world, to contribute to the magazine. While doing this, every care is being taken not to settle for anything less in relevance to the subject matters and their high-standard content. An exceptionally talented team is at hand to curate articles that match the needs and standards, enriching them with stories, interviews, investigations, research, and studies.
In pursuance of its principles, Al-Ummah will not spare efforts in its commitment to be deeply objective, intensely analytical, and exceptionally loaded in content and class. It may have differences of opinion, yet each opinion will stand on its own in terms of message and substance. It will see to it that reasons and sensible examination of an issue are not affected by emotions, weak beliefs, or false pretensions.
What is demanded of them is that they shall be competent and well-informed, representing honest opinions seriously held and convincingly expressed.
We do not expect that readers of the review will sympathize with all the sentiments they find there, for some of our writers will flatly disagree with others; but we hold that while keeping clear of mere vagaries Foreign Affairs can do more to guide American public opinion by a broad hospitality to divergent ideas than it can by identifying itself with one school. It does not accept responsibility for the views expressed in any article, signed or unsigned, which appears in its pages. What it does accept is the responsibility for giving them a chance to appear there.”
It promises to have a refreshing look and rich content, channelling its legacy and experience into unique and pioneering journalism. From politics and economics to cultural, scientific, and technological issues, the coverage will cross the Arab region and the wider world.
The Journals, both in print and digital, will have multi-language versions, initially Arabic, English, and Bangla. Stories will be published online daily, in both English and Arabic, and across social media channels. Full print editions in other languages will follow, including English.
Al-Ummah and its staff are committed to the highest ethical and legal standards, providing meaningful, far-reaching content in accessible language. Taking a data-driven approach with a balanced perspective, current events will be discussed, and their significance assessed, from a range of perspectives.
