Türkiye and Bangladesh recently held high-level discussions to take their bilateral military and defense relations to the next level. In recent years, defense cooperation between the two countries has grown significantly.

The meeting between Türkiye's Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army, Waker-Uz-Zaman, held in Ankara, is being considered by military analysts as a milestone toward deepening the future strategic partnership between Dhaka and Ankara.

Discussions on key military agendas

The meeting discussed several crucial military domains. The primary agendas of the discussion included:

• Military cooperation and strategic partnership: Managing bilateral military relations and formulating future joint strategies.

• Defense industry and technology exchange: Sharing Türkiye's advanced defense technology capabilities with Bangladesh.

• Joint training and academic sessions: Ensuring joint military exercises and advanced training facilities to enhance the professional expertise of military personnel from both countries.

Strengthening Dhaka’s arsenal of Turkish hardware

As part of their modernization efforts, the Bangladesh Army and Air Force are successfully utilizing several world-class Turkish military systems and platforms, including the world-renowned Bayraktar TB2 armed drone technology, highly effective Otokar Cobra and Cobra II tactical armored vehicles, and long-range, precision-strike TRG-230 and TRG-300 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS).

A roadmap for joint production

According to military observers, this visit has created potential for defense relations to expand beyond mere import-export transactions.

Under the future roadmap, both countries are likely to collaborate on transferring defense technology know-how from Türkiye to Bangladesh; explore possibilities for manufacturing military equipment locally through joint ventures; broaden cooperation in drone tech, radar technology, advanced Electronic Warfare (EW), and Air Defense Systems.

This new momentum in bilateral military and diplomatic partnership is expected to further consolidate Bangladesh's defense capabilities in regional security and geopolitics in South Asia.
